The United States of America has formally opened their embassy in Jerusalem. The US embassy in Jerusalem was opened on Monday 14th May 2018 amid some deadly protests by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and condemnation from the international community.
It will be recalled that in December 2017, US president Donald Trump had made the decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Following this decision, Trump announced the move of US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Trump’s decision brought a lot of backlash from the international community. An Emergency UN general assembly was convened as a result. A huge majority of the United Nations General Assembly subsequently rejected the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Jerusalem is a sacred city to Jews, Muslims and Christians alike and most countries are of the opinion that, the status should be determined in a final peace settlement and stating that the US moving their embassies to Jerusalem now would affect the supposed outcome of any such deal.
Taking into consideration the lingering crisis between Israel and Palestine over ownership of the Jerusalem, a US embassy in Jerusalem will certainly continue to generate headlines across the World.
